Nearly $10,000 was raised in “Lion Hearted for Haiti,” the MHC Athletic Department’s effort to support the earthquake relief effort.
A magnitude 7 earthquake struck Jan. 12 near Haiti's capital of Port-au-Prince. As many as 200,000 people are reported dead.
The Mars Hill community responded to the devastating January earthquake with several efforts.
The Athletic Department created “Lion Hearted for Haiti,” in which paper hearts, called “Hearts for Haiti,” were sold for $1 each. A donor could write his/her name on a heart and display it in Chambers Gym.
These hearts were sold throughout the month of February at home ballgames. Hearts are currently displayed in Chambers lobby.
Along with “Hearts for Haiti,” local area restaurants donated 20 percent of their earnings one day last month to the Red Cross to help those in need.
Also, a service of hope for Haiti was held in February in Broyhill Chapel on campus. This service encompassed a time of prayer and donations were collected.
