MHC Struggles to Minimize Affects of Deficit
Because more students than expected did not return after the semester break, the college now finds itself with a budget deficit of more than half a million dollars.
Nearly $10,000 was raised in “Lion Hearted for Haiti,” the MHC Athletic Department’s effort to support the earthquake relief effort. A magnitude 7 earthquake struck Jan. 12 near Haiti's capital of Port-au-Prince. As many as 200,000 people are reported dead.
Blood Donation Sparks Longest Dialogue
A forum about gay rights at Mars Hill College last month led to an extended discussion about people’s thoughts regarding rules that can hinder gays and lesbians from giving blood. Some at the forum did not know gays and lesbians could be turned away from giving blood because of their sexual activity.
Out Is In Finding Support on Campus
Mars Hill College students have formed Out Is In, a group to promote awareness and equality for people of different sexual orientations. Out Is In is a fairly new group out of MHC. The group began organizing last academic year.
Sexual activity is prohibited in residence halls at Mars Hill College, but students indicate that this rule may not hold up in reality. Nonetheless, policies followed by the college about the distribution of condoms on campus are intended to deter sex.
“I was writing an essay until five in the morning, but it turned out that it was not due today, and no one else did it! I am so mad,” complained Xiao Jiabin, a Mars Hill College freshman from China. For an interview concerning challenges that international students have to face, this was a good start.
For minds hungry for knowledge and eager for academic challenges, Mars Hill College has a new plan. An honors program was approved last spring, pushing it to the final stage of development.
