Inspired by the renowned book of Louisa Mae Alcott, Mars Hill College Theatre Arts Department presented "Little Women, the Musical" as the final student production of the school year.

The show was a musical rendition of the lives of the March sisters during the time of the Civil War as they come together in womanhood to learn about love and death and the delicate balance in dealing with the two.

The show featured a great cast of talent. Rachel Shipley played Jo March, a fearless and determined young writer and the main character. She sang in most of the show's numbers. Myriah Clifton played Margaret, Amber Watson played Beth, and Erin McFarland played Amy, rounding out the cast of the four March sisters from the novel.

All the actors offered excellent performances that embodied sisterhood and triumph. Jennifer Ariel played the motherly role of Marmee March and did an extraordinary job. She pulled off the mature role without letting her youthfulness detract from the character.

Chris Caggiano played the role of love interest Laurie, a neighbor of the March's and a young relative of the grumpy Mr. Lawrence, played successfully by J.C. Britt, who becomes one of the family after softening under the beguiling Beth, his piano-playing companion.

Mary Elise Jones and Jade Day-Burdett played the roles of Aunt March and Mrs. Kirk, both of whom are influences on the March sisters.

Romantic roles were played by Tyler Mercereau, who falls for Margaret, and Bradshaw Call slam-dunked Professor Fritz Bhaer in succumbing to Jo March's charms. His accent was very believable.

William Gregg, associate professor and artistic director of SART, directed the show, complete with an orchestra and many choreographed numbers. Choreography was directed by Heidi Kulas.

The show was a grand way to end the semester.
